S.O.A.P stands for:
Scripture: Reading the text out aloud 2 or 3 times.
Observation: What stood out for you?
Application: How does this apply to your life?
Prayer: Crafting a prayer around the text.

Let’s begin…
Today’s Scripture:
I will lift up my eyes to the mountains; From where shall my help come? My help comes from the Lord, Who made heaven and earth.
Psalms 121:1-2 NASB
Observation (I try and make the passage as literal and simple to understand as possible by using a Strong’s concordance and a dictionary for those more complicated words.):
The word for “help” can also be translated as “helper”
Also “mountains” can be translated as “hills” or “hill countries”
So the scripture can be read as this:
I will lift up my eyes to the mountains(hills/hill countries); From where shall my helper come? My helper comes from the Lord, Who made heaven and earth.
Psalms 121:1-2
Verse 2 especially, changed my perspective completely of this passage. Our helper does not come from idols (which were placed in the hill countries, or the high places, in the psalmist’s time), but from the Lord!
I never knew how prophetic this verse was.
I remembered Jesus talking about the “Helper” in the New Testiment. The disciples, being with Jesus must have been aware of this psalm! Have a look at what Jesus says about the Helper in the book of John:
But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you.
John 14:26
“When the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, that is the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify about Me,
John 15:26
But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you.
John 16:7
Psalm 121:1-2, as we know, was confirmed at Pentecost in Acts chapter 2 when the outpouring of the Holy Spirit occurred.
Appication:
An idol, in the present time, is anything you put above the Lord.
Where are you looking for help? Money? Material things? People? Or the Lord? Ask the Lord to search your heart. Whatever He is showing, bring it before Him in humility and repentance.
Prayer:
Lord, thank you for sending the Helper, Holy Spirit, to me through your Son. I’m sorry for putting my dependence on anything or anyone but You. Please will you forgive me? I bring these things to you and I repent of them. Please will you help me walk in this repentance? I ask you in the name of Jesus, amen.
